June 21st: Tons of Tuna, Dorado Print E-mail

Hello everyone. The red tide hasn't seemed to be too bad for Quepos fishing, as boats are slaying the Yellowfin Tuna right now, getting into schools of thousands of them and bringing home a boatful of the tasty football sized treats. Also, some nice Dorado have been caught. One boat got into a nice school of Tuna lately while fishing off the shores of Quepos and the commercial fishing guys were buzzing so close to them that they cut their teasers. When there is a big school of Tuna found, the commercial boats will school them up with a bunch of really fast dingys and keep everyone else off of the school... sometimes they come so close they will almost touch your boat.

Ojaran II caught ten Dorado, a Wahoo, a sail and a Tuna the other day. All they were missing was a Marlin!

My girls are back and Neko is sitting on my lap as I type this. I love it. She's a little squirmy for fishing report ease, but that's ok.

June 20th: Red water, boats are fishing and cleanup finishing. Print E-mail

Hello everybody. Today is a good day in Quepos as we are finishing up the cleanup and today will be the last day that the salvage divers are diving. So at least that marks a new beginning and we can all pick up the pieces and move on. For some that means putting some pieces back on their boats and getting back in the water to go fishing. For me that means putting the pieces of my engines back together and decide what to do next. We'll see...

The water yesterday was looking really red as far as the eye could see. Hopefully that doesn't hang around too long. Boats have still been doing alright fishing over the last few days, bringing home a few Sailfish and some Dorado.

I'm stoked, my girls come home today. I have decided that 11 days is too long to be away from your 9 month old. I missed her first tooth and my first father's day. :-(

Cross your fingers for blue water.

June 17th: Bite staying steady compared to past few days Print E-mail

Hola gente. Over the last few days the fishing off the shores of Quepos has remained pretty steady, with boats typically coming home with the species they were looking for. The inshore fishing is solid and the offshore fishing is productive.

And onto the fishing report... The Ojaran II caught 4 Rooster and 2 Jacks on a full day inshore charter. The Big Eye released four Sailfish and a Mahi Mahi. On her first day back fishing after the storm and sporting a new paint job, the Ojaran III released two Sailfish.

Quepos is pretty busy right now. I have noticed a lot of people at the dock and more people around town than in the past few weeks.

I checked out a pretty cool little Soda last night here in Quepos.  A soda is a restaurant that serves typical Costa Rican food. I had a "Casado," which is a plate with your choice of meat (I chose Dorado) and it comes with rice and beans, a salad and some other sides. Basically, it is a huge plate of good Costa Rican food for 1,500 colones. That's around $3. I love it.

It's raining a lot offshore today so we will see how fishing goes.

Oh yeah, I put a really cool map on the site that you can zoom in and move all around to view our town of Quepos.

Talk at ya later,

June 16th: Rooster fishing is solid, got an engine! Print E-mail

We were able to salvage one of the engines from the Precedent yesterday. We will get the other today.  It is all ready and disconnected but we didn't have a crane operator at the end of the day on a Sunday so we had to wait until this morning. Wish us luck.

Quepos fishing has been steady lately with the Roosterfishing doing really well. Some of the boats have been staying inshore and doing well. The Ojaran II had four Roosters yesterday on a full day of inshore fishing. Sea Lady went offsore and released 2 Sailfish and a Marlin.

The Big Eye brought home 2 nice Dorado on a beautiful sunny day of Quepos fishing... lucky.

Also, just a reminder that to do as much as I can for the fishermen and their families after the storm, Fish Quepos will be donating 25% of their profits to the ANOTA relief fund for the next three months. So if you are coming down to fish, shoot me an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to book your charter.

June 14th: Catching Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado and Cummins Print E-mail

Slow and steady wins the race is the motto right now as we dive day after day to try and salvage the Precedent's engines. Right now there are two 430HP engines just waiting to come to the top. I had to drive to SanJo at 4 in the morning yesterday to pick up a new pump that seems to be working really well and will probably be the last piece of the puzzle to finally finish this job. I can't wait to get this done and put it past me.

Onto a fishing for fish (not steel) note, Fish Quepos clients Stephen Walker and Meredith and Frank Moses caught a Black Marlin, a Sailfish and four Dorado while fishing in Quepos on the Blue Pearl II with Captain Juan Carlos. The Black Marlin fought for an hour and fifteen minutes and the effort was shared by Stephen and Frank. And the Dorado was shared by the crew... and me. What a day for all involved!

To help with relief efforts for the crews and their families, Fish Quepos will be donating 25% of their profits for the upcoming three months to the ANOTA relief fund. So if you are interested in booking a charter to do some Quepos fishing you can email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
